Can a SV Classic send ADS-B data to an IFD440?

Appendix E of the installation manual provides details about the serial data output available. ADS-B data is not included based on what I see.

What is your objective?

The objective is to provide traffic and weather information to the IFD 4/5.
While the screen size of the IFD440 is small, Avidyne has an app, IFD 100, that allows an iPad to have most of the functionality of the IFD . So that allows for a much larger screen size. My thinking is that provides a lot of options.
One that comes to mind is flying practice approaches. Now, if a plate is on the map screen on the SV, traffic is not visible. It would be nice if the safety pilot, in addition to keeping a keen look outside, could see traffic on the IFD 100.
While I am certainly not a developer, it doesn’t seem like it would be a huge challenge to provide ADS-B information to the IFD. I believe that this information is currently provided to ForeFlight.

best regards,
Chuck

I use the SkyView WIFI dongle and my tablet to do the same thing. With the FltPlanGo app I connect via the EXTERNAL > CUSTOM UNIT > PORT 4000 and it works just fine.

Hi Chuck,

Just to clarify, my question re your objective was not a challenge, only to insure I understood the question. :)

As I stated, ADS-B out on the serial ports is not a supported feature currently - at least not a published one.

As far as WiFi is concerned, you have no doubt looked here https://www.dynonavionics.com/skyview-wifi-adapter.php and found that IFR navigators are not currently supported for integration with Skyview.

BUT, v16 is around the corner, maybe that will change. :)

Regards,
Craig

I am reasonably familiar with the Dynon SV and have done some research on the Avidyne IFD and have seen little information on compatibility between the two. The Avidyne IFD series is very similar to the Garmin GNS series so the interface between Dynon and Avidyne is very similar to Dynon to GNS and that is documented. Avidyne lists several ADS-B and weather receivers that are compatible but no Dynon equipment is shown on the Avidyne documentation. That doesn’t necessarily mean that there is no compatibility, just nothing documented. My hope was that someone on this forum had experience with Anidyne IFD. Based on Avidyne’s marketing information they want to provide product technical information to other manufacturers so that compatibility’s can happen.
I suppose that I don’t have the drive to research type certification information and was hoping to find specific information here.
I have no idea how many Avidyne IFDs are operational in GA. Maybe the number is small and there is little incentive to do much work to support them.
I also don’t know how many Garmin GNS series are in the GA population. Maybe that is also a small number.
it seams to me that the IFD series has a lot of capability and since it is practically a plug in replacement for the GNS series there would be substantial support by manufacturers other than Garmin but maybe the population of IFD series is small.
Maybe this product is overshadowed by the big screen PFDs
I now have a GNS430W and I am amazed by its versatility. After 8 years of flying with the GNS430W I am still learning new things about it. Probably I am just a slow learner but it seems to me that the 430 does many things very well and it appears that Avidyne has made many improvements with the IFD series.
I have no affiliation with Dynon, Garmin or Avidyne other than owing equipment manufactured bu two of them.
Best regards,
Chuck

I havent found any solution that will send Dynon ADSB data to the Avidyne unit. It is unfortunate and hopefully will change. I have a separate Skytrax100 ADSB In using for the IFD540. Even though the Dynon does display traffic and weather it is nice to have another source. Since they are independent I notice sometimes they don't agree. The HDX seems to have a more complete traffic and weather at times...maybe because the Skytrax is 978 only.
