I just finished my backup battery test (sky view original 10") and tried to update my map databases. The sky view would not recognize my USB stick. Is this associated with the lower voltage of the backup battery? I tried to do the update right after the back up test.

Put it on ground power and try it.
I dont want to seem to "un-informed" what is ground power? I did put a battery charger on the main battery and tried but wasnt successful. the backup battery only has about 10 volts of power in it since the test. My next effort was going to be to start the plane and do it with the plane running. Good idea / Bad idea?

You should be able to perform the update on the main battery. The backup battery will not charge until at least 12.25 volts is seen within the SV screen (install manual, page 9-4).
Ground power, in your case, is an external charger on the main battery. Many chargers cannot power everything on the main bus and still produce 12.25 volts. Shut down as many things as possible and allow the main battery to get to 12.25 or more and you should see the backup battery charging.
If it still doesn't work, plug directly into the back of the display. Failing that, get a different USB stick (each screen comes with one).

I find that I cannot update software on the backup battery. With master on without engine running it updates fine. I think it is because some SV components are not powered by the backup battery.

I don't think I'd ever do this anyway. It's a bad habit, and may someday bite you (say, if you start thinking that you can update the software/firmware for the whole system while powered by just the backup battery...which may not even be possible...and it takes too long and the battery dies, turning your system into a doorstop).
Put it on ground power whenever uploading anything, then it won't ever be a problem, regardless of the state of the backup OR main battery.
Doug - not being able to see the contents of a USB stick doesn't rely on battery level. If your display powers on, you should be able to load databases. Do you have another memory stick connected? A display can only see one memory stick at a time. Are the map databases in the root directory (they need to be). What do you see in the load files page in the software setup menu? Or can you not even get there? If you're using wiring on the harness, you might try using one of the USB ports directly on the back of the display.
Also, definitely do NOT try to do any software updates without external power connected. Databases don't take as long, but best practice is definitely to do ANY updates/loads on external power.
