SYSTEM SOFTWARE UPDATES TO SKYVIEW AND AF-5000 SERIES AVIONICS BRING NEW CAPABILITIES

Dynon is the only company that boasts two fully featured avionics platforms for sport pilots. Both receive significant free software updates this summer.

SkyView 13.0 System Software debuts support for additional languages in SkyView. German and French language packs that transform SkyView’s on-screen interface will be free downloads from the Dynon website. SkyView 13.0 also brings support for additional en-route charts for customers outside of the US. At release, partners offering charts include PocketFMS (Europe), OzRunways (Australia / New Zealand) and AvPlan EFB (Australia / New Zealand). SkyView’s synthetic vision adds predictive terrain alerts that dynamically shade terrain in yellow or red based on the aircraft’s projected flight path. And pilots who fly behind the Rotax 912 iS powerplant gain useful new information, including throttle position, cold start assistance, and Eco/Power mode indications. SkyView 13.0 will be available shortly after Oshkosh.

Advanced Flight Systems’ new 12.0 system software for the AF-5000 series has Inset Windows that allow pilots to place small windows alongside their PFD displays. Available Inset Windows include Map, Traffic, Flight Plan, Profile View, G-Meter, and Video. Another feature enhancement is an improved flight planning interface that coordinates and integrates with the Avidyne IFD540 and IFD440 navigators. AF-5000 series products also gain support for Charts, Sectionals, Flight Guide Airport diagrams provided by Seattle Avionics for only $99/year. Finally, version 12.0 supports the Wi-Fi Adapter and flight plan transfer capability with ForeFlight Mobile. AF-5000 series 12.0 software is available now.

DYNON BUILDER SUPPORT TEAM AND ADVANCED QUICK PANELS OFFER COMPLETE SOLUTIONS FOR HOMEBUILDERS

Two complementary programs from Dynon provide the most complete avionics solutions possible for experimental aircraft homebuilders.

For homebuilders who revel in the details, the new Dynon Builder Support Team’s goal is to guide pilots from “first dream to first flight” by eliminating obstacles that builders face as they create their dream panel. Debuting at Oshkosh 2015 is the first wave of accessory products that complement their major avionics purchases. The first products to become available include an Autopilot Level Button, Dual ADAHRS Mounting Kit, AOA/Pitot/Static Installation Kit, Panel Module Faceplate Blank, ADS-B Harness, Transponder Harness, and Transponder and ADS-B Antennas.

For those who would rather leave their whole panel to the experts, Dynon’s Advanced Flight Systems division offers the Quick Panel System. Each Quick Panel is a fully-engineered and integrated panel of avionics that is professionally wired, configured, tested and ready to install. Quick Panels include all switches and harnesses, which all connect through the exclusive Advanced Control Module. For more information visit http://dynon.aero/quickpanels/.

D2 POCKET PANEL PORTABLE EFIS PRICED RIGHT FOR THE FLYING SEASON

The Dynon Avionics D2 Pocket Panel is the only portable, self-contained EFIS designed for use in any aircraft. Built with the same solid state attitude technology as in other Dynon products, the D2 can be a life-saver for GA pilots faced with a vacuum pump or gyro failure that would normally result in a high workload “partial-panel” scenario.

Full specifications of the SV-GPS-2020 will be released concurrent with it being available for sale in Fall, 2015. For now, the SV-GPS-2020 is fully compatible with all previous and future SkyView displays and systems.

What is the input voltage and current draw for the SV-GPS-2020?

Once SV-GPS-2020 is installed, if I use ForeFlight and have the wi-fi modules installed in my SkyViews, will I be able to monitor ADS-B traffic and weather, on my iPad, via a wi-fi connection to SkyView?

Great for Dynon and great for all of us to have an option to the Garmin monopoly.

Any plans for an exchange deal for current 250 receiver owners?

Your question assumes that you have the SV-ADSB-470 ADS-B IN module installed in SkyView.

No. The capability to send ADS-B weather from SkyView via Wi-Fi is not available in SkyView.

No. The capability to display ADS-B weather from SkyView via Wi-Fi is not available in ForeFlight.

Once SV-GPS-2020 is installed, if I use ForeFlight and have the wi-fi modules installed in my SkyViews, will I be able to monitor ADS-B traffic and weather, on my iPad, via a wi-fi connection to SkyView?

Carl:

It's early for that question, but likely if the SV-GPS-250 is installed the answer will be the same as with any of our products that we release improved versions of - Dynon generally doesn't do trade-ins towards a newer version of a product (the original EFIS-D10 and the SV-D1000 Touch Trade-In Program excepted). The SV-GPS-2020 won't be shipping until Fall, 2015, so at the moment, the SV-GPS-250 is the only GPS unit available from Dynon Avionics for SkyView. Check with us after the SV-GPS-2020 begins shipping in the Fall.

Great for Dynon and great for all of us to have an option to the Garmin monopoly.

A friend just returned from OSH and mentioned it is recommended the new GPS be mounted with a clear view as the previous one and recommended it not be mounted under the fiberglass cowling. My current GPS is mounted under the cowling and it has been trouble free with no dropouts at all in 300 hours or so. Is it only recommended or required it not be mounted under a cowling?

The issue is that the SV-GPS-2020 will need very good signal strength and clear view of the sky to provide a high integrity position report. Installing an SV-GPS-2020 may work in the position you have your SV-GPS-250, but it may not - we're giving the "heads up" about this issue well in advance. You can read our announcement here.

The FAA is really finicky about installed system performance. Is there any GPS quality/performance information provided by the installed functioning system to allow owners to insure the GPS is meeting the necessary performance criteria?

I ask because most TSO'd GPS systems INSIST that the antenna be mounted on the top of the airframe in the outside airflow. I'd like the ability to try to use the Skyview system in a glider with the GPS antenna in the center of the canopy with a clear 360 degree view of the sky but OUT of the slipstream.

FWIW - I've found the SV-GPS-250 antenna will 'lock on' inside a steel hangar whereas the Garmin GTN, 400/500 & GX (Apollo) series Gps antennas will not.
My GX60 (Tso 129A1) antenna works very well under the 1/2" foam fuselage top &, unless required to do otherwise, I will be mounting the new SV-GPS-2020 in the same fashion & will advise how it works out.
Given that the SV-GPS-250 does an excellent job in all the aircraft I've installed them in, I figure that the new 2020 version should be no different - Dynon may still advise on recommending external fitment though as indicated in reply # 13.

I too have found the "old" 250 to be remarkable in its ability to pick up signals. My project is still inside a brick home with a metal garage door, yet it seems to pick up a signal almost instantly under those silly conditions.

From the link located in post 13

"Additionally,  the SV-GPS-2020 may not work acceptably unless mounted on the outside of the aircraft. If the SkyView indicates excessive loss of ADS-B position, you may need to re-locate the SV-GPS-2020."

I am interested in how active and informative this Skyview "indication" is.  The idea that we can at least try is very encouraging as STCs and field approvals for certified ADS-B installations to not allow you any latitude for installation experimentation/verification.

Lastly, I've found just about every Dynon product to perform amazingly well. The GPS is just another example of how they do things.

The SV-GPS-2020 will self-monitor and indicate if it isn't getting adequate signal strength or other factors preventing it from providing high integrity position data.

We will have more information available as the SV-GPS-2020 is introduced, including complete details of installation considerations in the SkyView System Installation Guide, and and operational info such as indications mentioned in the SkyView Pilot's User Guide.
