Form factor and Standby displays.

Hi, I have an RV-8 with a full IFR Skyview 10-inch system (Com, AP....). Like most Experimental Aircraft my panel real estate is extremely valuable. that is why it frustrates me to have items I don't use often in front of my face, taking up space and cluttering up my panel. I have a G5 as an IFR backup but most flights it just sits there. I do appreciate having the redundancy in the off chance something goes wrong. I just wish it was more useful in my day to day flying while keeping the redundancy IFR flying requires.

That is why I was so excited to see the D30 hit the market. Before I started doing my research, I was hoping Dynon saw the same frustration I felt and built an IFR Sandby display which could do more for those 99% of flight hours where a standby is just there.

Wouldn't it be awesome if you could use a display with the form factor of a D30 to show engine information or a map but when that <1% of situations come around you have a secondary ADI, Air Speed, ALT, Heading and GPS?

I use the Grand Rapids GRT Mini X for this. Great backup to the Skyview. Full PFD (airspeed, altitude, vertical speed, heading, course, wind) and MAP (map with terrain and obstacles, CDI, course, heading, wind, route depiction, traffic, weather). I find it far more capable than the G5 and since we are Experimental the GRT is the way to go. I find the traffic (sent from my Echo UAT over serial) far more reliable than the ADSB 472 information to the Skyview as I have both. It can even control several models of transponder. I use it to control a Garmin SL70R since I prefer Mode C to Mode S and that eliminates the need for the transponder on the panel.

In my RV8 with Skyview classic 10" and GTN650xi IFR navigator, I installed an AV30E. It can be switched to HSI for attitude if ever needed, but in any mode connected by WiFi other times.

You both came up with great ideas but inorder to have a true IFR backup that is useful for normal flights I would have to buy someone else system. All my Dynon stuff works together nicely. I wish Dynon had a backup that would too.

That's an admirable thought, and one that I share - but I also think real hard about having a completely separate source of data in the case of failure. The Dynon system has redundancy built in, but it still is run by the same software code internally on all the devices and the possibility exists (remote, perhaps) that it could all flake out at the same time. I only have 3 pieces of non-Dynon hardware in my panel - the engine computer programmer (SDS), my IFR navigator (Avidyne, because Dynon is STILL dragging their feet on producing one :p ) and a G5. I really, really don't like Garmin - but the hardware they produce is generally good and the G5 fits the bill for me for an independent, compact, IFR attitude reference device.

Dynon Navigator, wouldn't that be awesome. It would be nice to have a Dynon system without seeing other companies label on my panel.
