The HS34 does not seem to get signal from 696. Continues to wait for fix.
Have configuration on serial 2 set to:
Garmin "NMEA In/Out" HS34 "NMEA 4800"

http://wiki.dynonavionics.com/Garmin_X96_Wiring indicates that the setting on the HS34 should be "Aviation 9600" which seems strange.

Is the problem enhanced because the HS34 is smart enough to see that the 696 is running in simulation mode as we didn't pull the aircraft outside to get a fix on the 696?

The Garmin units don't put out any data in simulation mode. There's nothing for the HS34 to listen to. You must be receiving a real GPS signal.

It's also true that you should set the 696 up for 9600 baud, since 4800 is slow for how much information is there and you'll only get an update every few seconds.

Hoped that it worked that way.Wouldn't want the plane flying around on a simulated course

NMEA or Aviation? The Aviation was the part that seemed strange...
Thanks for the help ....

Ah, yes, it should be NMEA. Cut/paste error or just fat fingers. Thanks!

Got the Garmin all fired up and talking to the EFIS and HS34.
It us COOL!!!
However, the 696 only works at 4800 baud. At 9600, it doesn't see it at all.

Thanks for all of the help!!!

When using 9600, try setting the data rate setting under the advanced nmea setup to "normal", not "fast". I didn't think that setting was unique to the 9600 baud rate, but it wouldn't hurt to check.

Tried it set for both normal and fast.
It didn't see it set at either at 9600.
The screen on the 696 says to set it at 4800...
Guess that they meant it.

Haven't updated the 696 in a few months ... but don't expect that that would make a difference....

696 works when set to aviation/NMEA or TIS/NMEA at 9600
696 works when set to NMEA at 4800
