Hi Folks,

RV-8 with D-180 +HS34 +AP74 with 2 servos connected and powered. No other avionics fitted yet. Still building the avionics.

Have updated the D-180 and AP-74 without problem to V5.5.0 but unable to update HS-34.

After start D-180 shows red network configuration error message which I clear (I always get that).

The knobs on the HS-34 make no difference to the displays on the D-180.

Config check shows all 5 devices and no errors.

Procedure and symptoms during update are is as follows:

1. Connect laptop to HS-34 via RS232 connector and power down D-180 via left switch.

2.The HS-34 GPS light is on but the Nav light is on but very dim (maybe light from the GPS light?) These lights are always like this so this is no change.

3. Start Product Support Programme and select Detect Firmware version.

4. The PC displays "connecting" then " attempting connection on Comm 5"

5. After a while I get an error message "Error Connecting to HS34 - Can't find instrument on any serial port.

I have checked the continuity of DASB A and B from the HS-34 to all the other connectors on the bus and they are all good.

Any ideas please?

Hello John,

Page 7-12 of the installation manual depicts the connection between your laptop and the HS34 to update its software.

So you need to separately upgrade your D180 (including AP74+servos) and the HS34.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Jacques. Yes indeed I have done the D-180/AP-74 update via the EFIS connector and that was fine but then attempted to update the HS-34 via its connector as described above.

Page 7-12 is acually from the D10A guide. I am using page 9-13 from the D-180 manual.

John:

If you've been able to successfully communicate with and update your FlightDEK-D180 / AP74 / servos, then you've proven out the combination of PC / USB to serial adapter / Dynon Product Support Program.

Likely there's an issue in your HS34 "laptop" connector; page 9-12 in the FlightDEK-D180 Installation Manual shows the HS34 to "laptop" connection more clearly.

The critical thing about the "laptop" connection is that since the PC isn't part of the plane's electrical system, there must be a common ground connection between the PC and the HS34 for the RS-232 RX/TX to work.

So, note the connections for "Laptop" on Page 9-12 and confirm those connections.

Thanks Dynon,

I made up some cables and hooked the HS-34 up to the laptop on the bench and the support program found the device so as you say the fault must have been in the wiring. I found the tx and rx lines reversed behind the panel - fixed and now the system powers up fine.

Many thanks - John
