OSHKOSH NEWS - Three new SkyView hardware modules! Visit us in Building D, Booths 4053-4054-4055 to see them first-hand.

First are two Mode-S transponders. The new SV-XPNDR-261 and SV-XPNDR-262 show traffic information displayed on the SkyView map and synthetic vision displays. They fully integrate into the SkyView System, with no additional panel space required for a separate control panel. At less than 1 pound, these small and power efficient hardware modules can be mounted anywhere in the airplane.

We are also introducing the SkyView SV-ARINC-429 Adapter Module, which delivers on the promise to make SkyView compatible with certified GPS receivers, integrating with radios such as the Garmin 430/530. These three new SkyView Modules will be available for delivery in the Fall of 2010. A great step foreward! Unfortuneatly not knowing these transponders were coming, I invested in a Garmin 330. Are you using a standard message format for the TIS that will allow the 330 TIS to integrate into the Sky View?

We do expect that we will be able to read the TIS data from a 330.

I have a question regarding the SV-XPNDR-262 that isn't explained in the brochure. How do you change the squawk code? It shows that the VFR code at the top of the display, but it's unclear how to change it.

I'm about to purchase a SV-D700 system, and was considering a discrete garmin gtx 327, but if I can get the same functionality with a built in device, I'm all for it.

From the brochure - Note, full ADS-B Out compliance requires a TSO-C146A GPS (WAAS) to be connected.

I'd suggest you need to read the info carefully IF you need to satisfy the compliance for ADSB OUT, ie the "w" series Garmin units and the 480.

There is a XPNDR button on the main SkyView menu. Under this is a OFF, GND, and ALT button, as well as a IDENT button, where you do that stuff. There is also a "CODE" button, and when you press this you get a 0-7 list of numbers to set the code.

You can do 100% of the functions of a normal transponder right from SkyView's screen.

Mode S transponders have a ground mode where they only respond to interrogations from ground radar. That is what GND is for.

We will be displaying traffic on the screen, but any system like this is very far from the actual definition of TCAS.

This thing is doomed before it ever gets started if the FAA thinks everyone is gonna install an $8K + GPS just to get a WAAS position source when perfectly acceptable WAAS gps's can be bought for less than $100.....

We are not shooting approaches to 200ft with this stuff!!!  A bunch of the cost for these panel mounted GPS's is in the RAIM technology. Why would RAIM be required for this application? How could RAIM even work in this application?

There is no doubt in my mind that some manufacturer will go through the hoops required to get a lower cost and less feature GPS certified as a ADS-B position source.

This is one area where people need to wait on the products to catch up with reality....

It's more than just WAAS as the Tso 145/146 has FD&E (fault detection and exclusion of 'bad' satellites) something not likely to be seen in a handheld Gps.

Over here we don't get a useable WAAS signal, and won't until a geostationary satellite is overhead - mooted cost is $100m so won't happen any time soon :(

I am interested in the ARINC-429 module and am installing avionics right now.  Can you give us the mounting dimensions so I can build a mount while the area behind the panel is open and accessible?

WAAS is probably not all that important as it only improves the precision from ten metres to a couple of metres when we are looking for 100s of metres clearance. More important are methods that verify the accuracy of GPS through fault detection (and exclusion). You want ADS-B to accurately report where you are.

Multipath and other false signals can put you a long way from your true position. For instance, if ADS-B reports that you are west of the field it doesn't matter if you are within two or ten metres, but it's importance that you are west and not east of the field. I've watched my WAAS enabled GPS495 altitude bounce around by 100's of metres but not report any problems with the signals. More capable (read expensive) receivers will let you know when the signal is accurate and excude any signals that are making it any other way. Yet they will probably not be any more precise then your WAAS enabled handheld.

Garmin's G500 is half the cost of the G600 and if that is any trend, I believe we'll see the cost of RAIM (and WAAS) capable GPS units drop in the next decade in time for ADS-B. That will probably be driven by the European scheduled upgrade that is five years ahead of USA.

What is important here is that Dynon has produced a product that can be used now to integrate TIS and later ADS-B with the Skyview. I look forward to being able to add traffic to an already fantastic product.

Lyn: Dimensions are the same as the ADAHRS, with the pneumatic ports replaced by a DB25.

Why is no one asking the obvious question?

Will the new Transponder allow SkyView to display "subscription-not-required" ADS-B Weather and TFRs?

Those would about cinch my upgrade to SkyView.

No transponder will allow that.  That information will be carried on UAT channels, not 1090ES.  So, unless I am badly mistaken, you will need at least UAT ADS-B-in in order to receive weather and TFRs via ADS-B.

This transponder is ADS-B OUT and TIS IN.

ADS-B Out is what the FAA requires by 2020.

TIS is traffic when in Class B and most class C airspace. It is not technically an ADS-B product at all.

ADS-B IN can be carried on 1090ES or a UAT frequency, but this transponder is neither. If you have a 1090ES ADS-B in device, you get only traffic. If you have a UAT, you get traffic and weather.

The FAA requires that you be transmitting ADS-B before you can receive traffic. So you need ADS-B out before you can get ADS-B in. This transponder gets you the ADS-B out.

Also interesting is that if you have a UAT in the future that does ADS-B out, you still need a transponder, which can be a Mode-C. But if you have a 1090ES ADS-B out transponder, you don't need another transponder.

So for new aircraft, equipping with a 1090ES, Mode-S transponder makes a lot of sense. You can then add the ADS-B IN UAT in the near future and use all services.

The nice thing is that while transponders are required to be TSO'd, ADS-B in devices are not, so we expect the ADS-B in devices to cost much less than a transponder.

Can the Skyview GPS add-on act as the WAAS source for the new transponder's ADS-B out?  If not, is there a planned upgrade to support this from Dynon?

The FAA 2020 mandate requires a full TSO WAAS GPS, which the Dynon receiver is not and can not ever be. Right now, the only devices are really a Garmin 430W or a Apollo 480, or some really expensive stand-alone GPS receivers.

Before 2020, you can use a non-TSO GPS for "advisory" position, which will let other traffic see you, but will not allow the FAA to use that position for separation.

Hopefully by 2020 there will be affordable TSO GPS devices. At this point, Dynon is not working on a TSO GPS as doing that is not our specialty.

Is there any good reason to have UAT ADS-B out in addition to 1090ES ADS-B out? Do they have potential to conflict?
