PowerFLARM Core Settings

Hi

Here's one mainly for other Europeans doing the PowerFLARM thing...

We've just installed a PowerFLARM Core and it's connected up to our dual SkyViews.

Although we have a green light on the PF Core box and 'Flarm OK' on the SV MAP, we don't seem to be picking up any traffic - transponder or Flarm.

SV transponder is 'on/alt', GPS locked on.

With a portable Flarm unit nearby, we are obviously transmitting Flarm okay as that is indicating it is receiving.

The SV PFD and MAP settings are to display 'all' traffic and everything seems fine on the Serial Input device settings - baud rate 9600 etc etc.

We have SV set to 'Flarm traffic' as the device setting.

On the PF Core we followed advice and set this to 'Garmin TIS'. [Not sure if I'm allowed to type 'Garmin' here - I certainly don't want to...]

One thing I have seen is a licence (unlock code) is required by Flarm for Garmin TIS but I don't know if that's when it is connected to a Garmin device or to enable the PF Core to output the info in 'Garmin TIS' language that SV understands.

On the PF Core output data that downloads to the USB it does flag up 'TIS licence' and then 'no grandfather rights'. Perhaps older units got free Garmin TIS and now you have to pay.

We've tried most things - including checking a friend's settings on a similar set up although that's been going for three or four years (so perhaps got the grandfather rights).

Anyone think of any SV settings we've missed? Any help will be much appreciated.

PS We've also installed the Dynon X83 com - that is an impressive bit of kit!

We have two RV12's both equipped with Powerflarm and dual SV1000. The Powerflarm serial port is connected to both SV's in parallel.
Works fine and a great investment.
The older plane Powerflarm had the TIS output as standard but you have to activate it with the settings PC software and load them by usb stick. This also applies to the serial baudrate and some other parameters. See manual.
I have configured the SV protocol to TIS and not Flarm.
When ok you get the green light on the unit and TIS OK on the SV's.
The newer Powerflarm (2 years) we had to pay an additional fee for TIS output.

Hi Jack

Many thanks for the information - sort of as I expected it then, it looks as though we need to get the Garmin TIS licence from Flarm.

We sussed the baud rate and other settings and get a green light so we know we're on the right track!

It was your fellow countryman, Joeri, who passed on his info. Joeri's RV-12 is our sister ship - he stole our paint scheme (with our blessing ;)).

Regards, Jerry

Yeah I know that guy. He cannot be trusted.
These commercial pilots don't make a lot of money I guess, so they have no choice then to steal :)

He stole the Powerflarm settings from me as well.

Hi Jack,

Another big thanks from my side - I have been looking for recent comments on PF and Dynon for some time now, since I am also considering to install such a unit (or similar).

You being a sort of expert on this (having actual experience with FL and Dynon SV1000): did you also consider the TRX1500 and if so, can you share why you chose the PowerFlarm Core?

Next week I will be on AERO Friedrichshafen to see what I can find out about all current ADS-B and Flarm units and what would be the best CAS/CWS choice for my RV7A with (planned) dual SV1000T displays.

It looks like it is narrowing down on:

- PowerFlarm Core
- TRX1500 (with or without the A)
- Some solution to combine Flarm with ADS-B using the recently launched Dynon dual band ADS-B receiver

I am still looking for detailed info on what is best supported and specifically what actually is shown (and how) on the displays. It is hard to find any good description of that.

Any comments you might have on all this is much appreciated! Pointing out where others already wrote great comments  would also be great (in which case I apologise for not finding it myself or posting in a wrong area).

Thanks for your great posts!

5 years ago it was the only device detecting mode S transponders, ADSB and Flarm and was able to communicate with SV1000.
Never bothered to look at something else as I am 100% happy with it.
I also installed it in the second RV12 we have.

Most non European devices will only show ADSB which are mainly airliners at high altitudes and are not of interest.

We will fly to Aero2017 on tuesday and be at the show on wednesday.
We fly and stay in Dornbirn just across the lake.

Hi Jack
I am based in Melbourne, Australia. I have a Power Flarm Core(PFC) and Dynon Skyview setup.
Question 1: How do I connect Dsub connector from PFC to DynonSV i.e. Wiring Diagram? and Software setting in Skyview?
Question 2: FlarmView 57 display keeps detecting the transponder (Dynon-26x) on board as another aircraft
(Ghosting), how to stop this?

Cheers

Answer 1: serial in/out from PFC to any available DynonSV serial out/in, do you really need a wiring diagram? In DynonSV Settings: e.g. Serial Port 3 Setup: Select Serial In Device: Air Avionics TRX-1500, baud rate: 9600

Answer 2: enter your ICAO code into the PFC
