I can't believe the incredibly stupid things I do. Do three of the pins in this connector look different than the rest??

I crimped on male pins instead of female pins.

How in the world do I get these pins out now? They clicked nicely in place. Is there a tool made for removing these?

THanks... :-[

All kinds of them and cheap. Look in any of the aircraft suppliers like Aircraft Spruce for dsub pin extractor.

I think a few of them comes with Dynon kits. Mine did. Look for a plastic double-ended tooth-pick looking tool that is green and white.

You want to go in from the insertion side and press in with the tool while gentry trying to extract the pin.

BAC - Just a quick correction on Hiroo's post. The green and white tool is for high density pins. The standard pin extractor is red and white. As previously stated, the pins are extracted from the back side of the connector. I think the metal tipped extractors are best, as the plastic ones get broken easier. I would suggest buying several in case of breakage. I have probably gone through three or four. Steinair is also a good source, and they have a variety of extractors for Molex and other type connectors.

I have a few of the metal ones as well since I do a lot of these D-Subs. The green and white ones came with the Dynon's connector kit. So far, I have not come across any high density D-subs in Dynon connectors. I got one on my CNX-80 but that is the only place I have used the high density D-Sub. It seems odd that Dynon is supplying tools for connectors they do not use?

Hiroo, not sure where I first associated red or green tools with pin size (long time ago), but did a little more research and came across a Vertical Power manual that lists red as standard pins and green as high density. I have also seen references that suggest the red can also be used for high density, which makes sense as the barrel is flexible and can be closed down for high density. I have noticed that there are several different pin gauge size extractors that are green, but haven't seen any specific references that green can be used for standard density. I mostly use high density pins for Garmin, so I think there are a lot of Dynon EFIS' interfaced with Garmin GPS' like the 430 and newer units.

The tool that Dynon ships is green, and it is for standard density pins. It doesn't last for as long as the red and white metal version, and is particularly not good at withstanding any mishandling. I've botched up one or two, but fortunately several of my Dynon components each came with one. I also have owned a few of the metal versions, in which the standard pins are used with the red tool and the HD pins are used with the green tool. Those hold up better and are worth the few dollars they cost.

While not helpful to us builders, it is true that regardless of whether there are any industry conventions about the color of the tool and the size of the pins, the Dynon standard density tool is green and white.

But having said all of that, those tools are intended to remove the pin from a hole of the correct gender. I've not actually tried removing the reverse gender with the tool. Hopefully it will work! If all else fails, you can chop off the wires and start fresh, and you're only out $5 in materials.

You'll find the green plastic tools, like the ones Dynon supplies, work on standard D-Sub pins that Dynon uses. If you want a tool that lasts longer, get the metal one but it will be Red/White.

An even better tool, if you do a lot of this work, comes from Daniels Manufacturing Company (DMC). Quite pricey, though.
