Skyview ABS-B on Avidyne IFD-540

Avidyne released software 10.3 on Wednesday. One of the big changes is it allows the Avidyne to display ADS-B weather and traffic from other devices as long as it is on Wi-Fi and using Port 4000.

I installed version 10.3 on my Avidyne but unable to display any ADS-B products. The IFD is configured for the weather/Traffic over WiFi, and connected to the Skyview network, but i get a datalink error.

When I look at my Foreflight, devices tab it shows the Skyview weather/traffic is on IP: 10.177.82.171:8384. It looks like the Skyview network uses PORT 8384. I think this is the problem? Is there any way to change this to 4000?

I looked at the USER CONFIG.DFG file and searched for any network settings but could not find any. Anybody have any other ideas????

Thanks,

Kurt

I just upgraded my IFD540 to version 10.3 and am having several issues, all regarding the WiFi connection.
My system is a Dynon Skyview D1000T, with the ABS-B 472 Receiver, and the IFD-540.
The upgrade to 10.3 went fine. No errors. I enabled the Weather/Traffic over WiFi in the configuration page.
I configured the IFD WiFi to connect to the Skyview network.
After a few min’s I get “ADS-B Traffic Sensor Fault” and “Datalink Receiver Fault”. I also have Foreflight on an Apple Tablet connect.
With the aircraft outside, and IFD GPS locked I see traffic flying over head on the Skyview display and Foreflight. Nothing on IFD. IFD shows Traffic lined out.
While looking at Foreflight, Setup, Devices tab, I see Skyview device, ADS-B device, and IFD device. But the IFD will disconnect from network and reconnect periodically. I am never able to get a stable network connection that maintains connection with the IFD when connected as remote device on Skyview network.
I returned to the Configuration page in setup and disabled the WiFI weather/Traffic.
This removed the ADS-B Traffic Sensor Fault and Datalink Receiver Fault but it IFD would still drop WiFi connection with the Skyview Network according to Foreflight Devices.
Basically I think 10.3 is worse, i loose capability over the previous version.

I have a email out to Avidyne tech support.

I wish to revert back to version 10.2.4.1. Is this possible????

I figured out how to configure the IFD now to accept WiFi weather and traffic.
however - IT DOES NOT WORK WITH SKYVIEW.

it does work with a stratux. I had another airplane in the hanger. I configured the WiFi connection to connect to it and was able to see traffic on the IFD.

there are some new setup items that you have to configure it order to use, even if you only want to use Foreflight with your Skyview and IFD

In the IFD config you must enable WiFi portable devices.
After exiting config setup and reboot you must go to AUX SETUP page and enable WiFi connection. Then on the Networks tab you must select the Skyview network.

Then after a while you will get an green message that indicates you need to approve a device is wanting to connect to Avidyne. You have to go to the DEVICES tab in the user setup and allow the connection. you can select ALWAYS to avoid doing this every power cycle. Unless the IP address changes.
You will have to do this for Skyview system and for the Foreflight tablet.

Once this is set the Skyview and Foreflight will communicate with each other.

Hi Kurt....I'm getting those same messages from my IFD. Just curious if Dynon responded with a fix.

Thanks,

This is an Avidyne problem, not Dynon.

With the 10.3 upgrade, Avidyne supports ADS-B on the IFD540 over wifi, but the ADS-B data needs to be in Capstone format, also called, I believe, Open Standard or GDL90. Dynon's ADS-B receiver uses a tweaked version of this protocol and so is not compatible. My current understanding is that the only commercially available device for which this will work on the IFD540 running 10.3, is the Stratus 3 ADS-B receiver with open standard enabled. The Sentry and Sentry Plus from Foreflight do not support Capstone nor does the Dynon receiver. The kit built Stratux receiver does support this, I believe. There are a number of receivers that work with the IFD540 10.3 via WiFi actually. The uAvionix EchoUAT (among others in their linup) device is one, for example, and the GRT Discovery ADS-B receiver is another - both commercially available. Lots of choices...except Dynon, for whatever reason, chose to be proprietary.

Good to know there are a few more choices. I am surprised that the Foreflight Sentry line of receivers does not support GDL90, given that they are made for Foreflight by uAvionix, which also makes the EchoUAT you mentioned. Would be much more useful.
