I have an original Dynon Skyview. I also have a Garmin 327 transponder. I would like to have the Skyview connected as the altitude encoder for my Garmin 327. How do I connect it and how do I need to configure it at the Skyview and at the Garmin 327?

Thank you...

This configuration is in the installation manual. Check there for exact settings. From memory any Skyview serial port out set to Icarus. This goes to an available serial (RS 232) port in on the GTX 327. Set baud rate on the Dynon to the same as is on the 327. Even 1200 will work fine but they do need to be the same.

For those reading this thread that are upgrading to 335 or 345, you'll need two vacant serial ports if you want the SkyView to send altitude data to the Garmin and the Garmin to relay status and code back to the Skyview. There's a post detailing the hookup on this forum.

Probably important to clarify that you'd need one serial TX from Dynon to Garmin and one RX from Garmin to Dynon - only one port would be used out of 5 available.

The Garmin 327 requires gray code for altitude. Dynon sells a serial to gray code converter, for this purpose.

Our experience was otherwise, but please go ahead correct where you see fit. I'll clarify.

Our local avionics shop used their laptop to program our GTX335 to send transponder code/status and receive altitude encoder information. I can't be sure of the settings on the Garmin side.

The Dynon serial port 4 was set to send ICARUS Altitude and receive Garmin 330ES.

We had the two units talking ICARUS together and the Garmin was happy to show pressure altitude, but the Skyview would only show transponder status (ALT, GND etc) and VFR code but not individual assigned/set codes. If we typed 3000, or any random number into the Garmin the Skyview would show either 1200 or 2100.

The avionics rep suggested we needed another port, which we currently don't have available.

There was a thread by dwrichey that has been removed in the same week that I stumbled upon it from which we based our settings upon. I'll attach a screen print.

Thoughts?

The 335 is capable of serial connection for altitude data. The 327 is not. I doubt it would send anything back to Skyview through the serial to gray code converter.

The 327 will take altitude over serial. This is a receive only function for the Skyview. Nothing is sent back to the Dynon. The settings are in the installation manual. The Dynon will not control a 327 (this would take a different TX/RX serial channel). It will report the code of the 327 if a serial out of the 327 were sent to another serial input on the Dynon properly configured but cannot change it.
