Switching Com from IFD540 to Dynon Com Panel/ GPS Map Question

Hi - trying to learn the ropes with my new HDX Panel. Two questions -

1. I have been unable to figure out how to switch the radio source between the Dynon com panel and the Avidyne 540 Unit. Any suggestions? As a beginner I’d prefer to stick with the simpler Dynon com panel and leave the Avidyne panel for later...

2. To familiarize myself with the display/system, I am twisting knobs and pushing buttons while in my hangar. I can roll the plane out of the hangar and pick up an accurate GPS which then displays an accurate position on the HDX map. But when I roll back inside, shut off the system then reboot, the map (again with no GPS signal) reverts back to showing my position somewhere in Kansas. My hangar is at KAWO (Arlington, WA). Why does the system revert to an inaccurate location? Shouldn’t it revert to the last known position?

Thanks for any help. I’ve watched the online tutorials but perhaps missed answers to the above.

Do you have an audio panel for COM? What are the two radios hooked up to? The Dynon by itself cannot "switch COM radios". Maybe I'm misunderstanding the question...

1. You'll need a switch in the panel to select the radio you want to transmit on.
2. Sounds like the internal battery needs to be replaced in the 540.

Why would you be concerned about the battery in the 540 with regard to the default location display. Wouldn't the HDX get it location information from the Dynon 251 or 2020 GPS receiver?

No...........its not the internal battery. When the GPS signal is missing and the 540 boots up (or a Garmin for that matter) it thinks it is still in Kansas. THIS IS NORMAL. The certified GPS is telling the HDX what to do and where it is. The Dynon GPS is saying nothing. Get a skylight in your roof :)

And as mentioned above the HDX just talks to the SV-COM.

Your question is not very clear. The Dynon will not "switch" com radios, you will need an Audio Panel if you want to manage two Comms. You can define Your HSI source on the PFD to be either your Dynon GPS or the IFD. Additionally you can choose which Flight Plan you want to show up on your Map display (Either the Skyview FP or the Avidyne FP). On the GPS not remembering where it is, mine did the same thing until I had the Plane out, running and moving about, until then it kept returning to the Seattle area when I would boot it up.

Appreciate all the replies. Yes, recognize that my original question was perhaps not too clear... but sorting through the replies gives me some suggestions/clues of things to try next. Yes, I do have a audio Panel. But seemingly no connection between it and the SV display. eg I don’t have any radio info displayed on the top bar of the SV display. I think a likely cause might be the Dynon GPS signal, it’s pretty weak where I am testing it. Also, not sure if it’s a factor, but I have not started the engine yet. Definitely a lot to slog through... thanks again for taking the time to reply.

Not sure why your IFD shows a KS area. If it doesn’t receive an accurate signal, it typically reverts to Avidyne’s support facilities in MA. This is by design.

As for your Dynon radio, it also uses GPS to determine NRST airport. It’s not automatic btw. You have to set the airport ID that you want to tune to tune the SV-COM? Which GPS is the SV-COM connected to?

Thx XPRSAV8R, I plan to spend some quality time behind the panel and with the manuals tomorrow. But to respond to your comments - when I fire up the panel in the hangar with no GPS signal BOTH the IFD and the HDX revert to Kansas. So they are linked somehow. Haven’t figured that out yet.

And when I do obtain a GPS signal outside the hangar, both displays revert to an accurate position. But while the HDX shows a correct list of nearest airports, it will not let me select one, choose a freq and transport it over to the Dynon audio panel. The HDX says it is using GPS 1. The HDX screen does not show a comm bar at all in the upper section. I’ll get there eventually, but still scratching my head.

Thanks again for all the replies.
