Simple Airspeed Calibration using SV and Autopilot

Here' a method using a fusion of some borrowed ideas and the capabilities of SV. It provides immediate results without crunching a lot of data: 1) Pick an altitude and heading, stabilize speed and engage the TRK+ALT on the autopilot. 2) Note the heading of the calculated winds and turn to that...

    Battery Charging "Fix"

OK, let's face it.  Charging the SV backup battery is a problem.  We have two choices: 1) Fly the aircraft for several hours (I'm over 5 hours and it's still not fully charged). 2) Put a large capacity battery charger on the aircraft battery, turn on the Master Bus and come back in up to 4...

    display .pdf files

It would be very handy to be able to display the install guide and user's guide pdf files on the SV screens. Would simplify installation and debug... and could even be used for (gasp) checklists. For the time being, they could be stored on the thumb drive, but internally would be beneficial...

    contact sensor config

You can't directly input to the EMS with a 12V signal.  The work around is to use a series diode (1N4148, 1N4007 etc.) to allow the signal to pull down the Dynon input, but not drive it high.  It will pulled up to 5V internally. I've done this with signals that drive annunciator lamps to 12V as...

    External Dimmer Control -- Issue

Thanks for the suggestions. Right now, I am taking the feed from a Van's dimmer module that also controls some annunciator lamps, backlight label strips and a compass backlight, so I'm stuck with the current behaviour. A dual wiper pot is a clever work-around for this. Unfortunately, I'm not...

    External Dimmer Control -- Issue

I've configured the external dimmer for my SkyView. I've noticed that in a power-fail scenario (using battery power), the screen goes very dim. The root cause of this is that the external dimmer input voltage drops to zero during the power fail, and the SV senses this and goes to it's lowest...

Best place to install the Skyview Amp Shunt

Melted Shunt Base Today, I found my Shunt free-floating under my cowling. The plastic base had melted and the shunt attachment screws had pulled through. It was located more than 10 inches from any exhaust pipe, so I concluded that the plastic base is not the proper material for this...

    Checklists?

Thinking through the problem usually gives you the answer. Emergency checklists should be in paper form. Not only a good idea, it's the law.

    Checklists?

Be careful what you ask for. Checklists on an EFIS are ok for normal operations, but in emergencies such as an electrical fire, the EFIS is likely to be turned off. How about the pre-start checklist, when the EFIS is still booting up? Emergency checklists should always be in paper form...

    "Flight" Timers

Yes a bit ocd, but if a feature is implemented, why not do it right? Just rename it to Air Time and the confusion is eliminated.

    "Flight" Timers

Nope, you are just confirming that Dynon's interpretation is contrary to common usage. Dynon's "Flight" time is called "Air" time by ICAO Dynon does not provide the equivalent of the ICAO "Flight" time, but Hobbs time is close and is commonly used.

    "Flight" Timers

Dynon's interpretation of Flight Time in the SkyView seems to be at odds with common usage, at least in Canada. My interpretation is: Air time commences when the aircraft leaves the supporting surface and terminates when it touches the supporting surface at the next point of landing. Flight...

    Boot up

I'll wait for it to happen again and see if I can get more details. Thanks, Vern

    Remote AOA indicator

I developed a remote indicator for the D10a. It sold in reasonable volumes, but I discontinued it. My experience with my own product (and referred to by Paul Dye's article on AoA in KitPlanes magazine), is that a visual indicator of this type did not enhance flight safety. Instead, the...

    Boot up

I see basically what Jesse describes, except that a few seconds into power-on I get about three spashes of green horizontal lines on the screen for a few seconds, followed by the normal boot sequence. Sometimes this normal boot sequence almost finishes, then reboots itself with the green...

    Boot up

I would like a faster boot up for the SkyView system. In addition, the current boot sequence where the screen goes crazy for a few minutes gives a poor impression and may give passengers concern about the system quality. How about a more professional power-on sequence?

    Undocumented(?) Features

Yes, these are features, not bugs. I agree that it's a good thing to stay on in flight! I should add one more: 3) The SkyView cooling fans can serve as a window defogger. I put a muffin fan behind my SVD1000 to suck the warm air from the SV and blow it on my windscreen. Won't find that in...

    Undocumented(?) Features

A couple of things I've picked up which may not be documented (I'll admit to not reading everything): 1) If you hook a Garmin Aera configured as a secondary position source to the SV and use the Aera to select airports or airport frequencies, these will be received by the SV and then pushed to...

Skyview EMS and IO-540 P-Lead Resistors

Sometimes it's a configuration problem! I found that the pin was not configured, so hopefully that's the fix. Thanks, Vern

Skyview EMS and IO-540 P-Lead Resistors

I have a new install, with SV 6.0 software; Standard magneto on left, Electroair on right, IO-540 D4A5. Tach indicates properly with Electroair, but drops to zero when Electroair is turned off. Magneto is still operating fine. Checked the data log, it shows identical rpm on both L and R...
