According to the updated user manual I just read, this is normal expected behavior for non-Dynon com radios.

I typically run 121.5 on my Dynon com. If I use the auto tune feature within some distance of destination, is there an option to reset to 121.5 on startup for the next flight?

No, it's not agl. It's MSL or above standard elipsoid. Comparing various pics in flight I see it's typically 100-400 higher than the altitude displayed on the HDX.

I did check the network status and everything is online. Of course the com panel didn't fail when I checked it. I tried powering it up a dozen times and it didn't fail. Hard to troubleshoot when it doesn't fail.

Please consider adding the option to display CDI & Glideslope superimposed over attitude indicator. It is much more intuitive than having to look elsewhere for that data. Here's a pic showing the yellow needles of an ILS:
