D10A with GPS175

I saw on VAF you (Dynon) successfully got Garmin 175 talking to Skyvirw and Advanced. Will it work to feed a D10A/autopilot - how about HSI & CDI/glideslope indicators with or without HS34?

Understood - was curious if anyone actually has done so successfully or if Dynon has tested it (I know they have a couple of 175’s in house).

D10a/d100 will work with all ARINC -429 connections as long as you use an HS34. I have a wiring schematic for a 175 to D100 via HS 34 that i will attach down below for you.

HS34 seems to only have one ground. When hooking serial to GPS 175 per posted schematic how are folks handling ground? I’ve never relied on power ground/airframe for serial cable? Assuming I just run a ground wire from the common/ power ground on HS 34 to the specific RS232 ground on Garmin?

@Valsoar I'd love to hear updates as you go down the path of install. I'm starting to install the GNC 355 GPC/COM and HS34 in my CTSW. I received the attached schematic from Dynon and then I added the link to my TT autopilot into it to get confirmation from them that I'm thinking about it correctly, they confirmed it was correct. I'll post updates here as I go. I had the same serial ground question, although the schematic from Dynon attached does not show the ground installed. I'm waiting to get the harness build started to send a single message with all the questions I had to Dynon, Bendix (for Trutrak) and Garmin. I've had a few exchanges with Bendix and Dynon. Garmin will not talk till I have the GPS in hand and provide them with the serial number (arriving in 2 more days)

FWIW - I’m getting close on my harness. I did go ahead and run serial ground from GPS175 to the common/master ground on the HS34. I figured it would do no harm. Now working on the one remaining HS34 connection from my VAL INS422 NAV receiver. Probably be ready to bench test everything with next couple of weeks. I’m in no panic as I plan to do install when I have things ripped apart for condition inspection in July. I’ll post updates as I progress.

I'm also in no rush, taking my time and getting it down right. I also considered the VAL INS 422, being that more and more VORs are going away every year (we have NOTAMs all over about nav facilities "not longer being maintained"). I opted for GPS only. The intention is not a hard core IFR platform. For me it's an IFR trainer and after I have my ticket I'd punch through some marine layers along the coast without having to stress too much. I'm happy to spend a little $$ to rent a 172 to get VOR, LOC and ILS training done, as long as the majority of my training can be done in my plane and then after that I can fill my marine layer mission with GPS only.

In order to keep from critics slaying me for a GPS only solution I'll clarify. I've read the FARs, I'm in compliance. I have a GPS696 for back up slaved to the AP and HS34 as well (yes not IFR certified, but in an emergency it's much better than nothing) and as an additional back up I have a handheld nav/com as well as foreflight running on 2 ipads and an iphone.

I look forward to your updates and will post my learnings as well.

I've started to build the harnesses. The Dynon HS34 side is done, but I stalled on the Garmin side because I didn't account for the high density connectors and pins not being able to accept anything larger than 22 AWG wire (I was using 20AWG). Waiting for my 22 AWG to arrive Monday to start back up again.

To follow up on the dialog above, I asked Garmin about the shielding ground on the HS side and as expected they sent back an answer that basically equates to.... I don't know Dynon's needs. For not I'll terminate them at the HS34 side with a ground pigtail, if for any reason I get any "noise" in the signal I'll try running a line to aircraft ground. If anyone has input please advise, but sounds like just terminating the shield at the HS34 is fine.

One question, Garmin calls out 18 AWG power and ground (see screen shot). Since the HD connector and pins can only accept 22 AWG, my assumption is I run 18 AWG to the connector and then splice in 22 AWG and break it out to the 3 power and ground pins. Does this sound about right?

I assume on the 175 to HS34 drawing that the RS 232 to the autopilot is a backup in case the 429 has an issue is that correct? I also assume I could connect that RS232 to a switch that could switch the input to the TT AP between the 175 and my 760 in the event that the 175 had a problem.
What capability does the RS232 from the 175 to the HS34 provide as I currently have a SL30 connected on those pins and assumed that the HS34 would cycle between the GPS and Nav inputs using 429 for the GPS and RS232 for the Nav.

But that isn't needed/applicable for the HS34.

Thanks for the reply very helpful, in my case I have the aera 760 on pin 1 of the male DB25 on the HS 34 and the SL30 on pins 2 & 15. If I connect the 175 via the 429 then I believe I would be able to cycle the HSI between the 175, the 760, and the SL30 nav sources. The 760 is also connected to the TT AP via RS 232 and I would leave that connection in place to have a backup lateral GPS nav capability if the 175 failed for some reason. Make sense?

What information does the D-100/HS34 pass to the 175/375 over the arinc 429? Does it include the altitude encoder data or does that still need to connected over RS 232 from the D-100 to the navigator? Also does the OAT data go to the 175/375?
