It's just an easy method for installation as it doesn't matter how they are wired or installed. When you configure them they figure out which way they have to move for pitch up/down and roll left/right.

I believe larger hole in the panel is the only difference.

Could be the iCOM. As mentioned my analog gauges would do the same thing. I don't remember my old Valcom 760 affecting the gauges.
