    I should have said 13.5V seems a little low for a 14V system. Internet consensus is 13.8V to 14.2V. Page 9-4 of the install manual states that it may take up to 4 hours to fully charge the backup battery. Good enough reason to go flying again.  :)

    NMEA data stream is a one way data flow. There can be several listening devices but only one talker in the NMEA protocol. So one wire (TX) from the NMEA talker device to a listener (RX) device plus a common ground is all that is needed. Anything sent the other way will be ignored.
